OT Odd computer problem
From: pcarnahan@comcast.net

Okay you computer literate out there, Here's the strange thing that's happened. I can get to the internet from my settings on the computer but my husband can't. Same computer. It tries to go on but can't make it and goes back to his desk top. And neither of us has the "tools" button showing.

Any suggestions?

You need to have someone who can spot shoot the problem from a vastly greater knowledge than I have, yet the first question that comes to mind is what system are you using and do they have more "traffic" than their system can handle.

It may be that you'll have to go through several attempts to sort this kind of problem out and on this list I'm certain there are many who can help.

The first thing my husband does is look at the operating system and how the parts are connected to the programs. He's a computer expert coming on 30 years but he specializes in wide area
don't think it's likely to be that special matter.

To me(not a computer savant) it sounds as though the internet isn't recognizing his log-on.

Just a thought.

Hello Patricia,

what type of provider do you have, and what browser are you using?

if you have anything by mccafee, or norton internet security installed
on the zombied machine, uninstall it.

if you have any other kind of firewall software running on it (zone alarm)
make sure it's set to allow traffic.

assuming no topology changes (network cables, hubs, routers, etc) the
problem is going to most likely be a software or driver update. (windows
usually updates itself on tuesday nights)the above two pieces of software
are the worst culprits ever.

questions:
who is your provider?
(if it's comcast, are you using a motorola surfboard modem, if so what model?)

what kind of modem?
(this will be a dialup, cable, dsl, or a satelite modem, or possibly
a wireless bridge. it's the one that hooks into the wall)

what kind of router?
(this is the box that all the computers plug into, goes between the
computers and the modem)

you *may* have a single box that does both, like an actiontec or 2wire.

let me know, i assure you i can help.

as a test...

on both machines, click start, click run, type cmd in the box and hit enter.

it'll open a black box.

in the box type ipconfig and hit enter.

it should give you something like this:
---
C:\Documents and Settings\stone>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Hamachi:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 5.192.84.185
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 5.0.0.1

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.193
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.254

C:\Documents and Settings\stone>
---

the one we care about is the local area connection

cut and paste, copy, or type the:

---
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.193
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.254
---

lines from both machines into this e mail and send them to me.

while you're in that command prompt, on both machines, type

ping 74.53.95.178

your response should look like:

---
C:\Documents and Settings\stone>ping 74.53.95.178

Pinging 74.53.95.178 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 74.53.95.178: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=255
Reply from 74.53.95.178: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255
Reply from 74.53.95.178: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=255
Reply from 74.53.95.178: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

Ping statistics for 74.53.95.178:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

C:\Documents and Settings\stone>
---

if you get request timed out, the machine isn't routing.
if it is, try the above, but do it as

ping www.L7.net

and see what you get.

if you don't get a reply, the problem is domain name
services.

thanks :)

gah. read this wrong.
thought it was two different machines

click start, click run, type cmd hit enter
in the black box type ping www.google.com and hit enter.
if it gives you a response like "Reply from 74.53.95.178: bytes=32
time=1ms TTL=255" it's fine,
try the other login.

if it's also fine, then the problem is your browser.

i *highly* suggest firefox.

you need to define "go on".

the machine is either on the internet, or it's not.

you browse the internet with a web browser.

if you launch your browser, and it disappears (crashes to desktop)
you have a corrupted user profile or a broken browser.

if your browser does not allow you access to the tools menu then you
probably have a virus or some kind of malware/spyware that has
changed the local security settings.

either way, you should install firefox and be done with it.

also, while you're in the command box do this:
---

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\stone>chkdsk /f
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
---

say yes and reboot.

Tools menu: before doing anything rash, right-click on the menu bar, and select "Customize toolbar". See if "Tools" is listed in available or current toolbar buttons. If it's not in the current set of buttons, but is available, select it and click the "Add" button. Sometimes things like this are actually configuration problems (especially from third party apps), and nothing is actually broken.

I've had nothing but a pleasant experience with IE, even the betas, for the past ten years since I switched from Netscape and, before then, Lynx. I wouldn't install Firefox if my life depended on it. For that matter, I also refuse to install any third-party toolbars, such as Yahoo or Google. If you have installed any such, you might uninstall them first to see if they're interfering for some reason -- most problems involving Microsoft software has nothing to do with Microsoft, and everything to do with third party apps not playing by the rules. (Not to say that Microsoft is pure in this regard -- it's an ongoing and difficult problem in research to prove that software is correct -- but it's best to reduce what you can before making any declaration of "Micro$oft == teh sux".)

Contact Comcast Customer Support with the details of your connection hardware and they should be able to tell you over the phone what's up.

If that doesn't work I'll refer the question to my husband and try to get you help through that avenue.
Is your Internet an MSN active connection? Which connection do you have, you'll need this information. As example I have MSN Internet through premier1.net as part of SeaNet.

It get complicated really quickly.
